PASTA and flour have overtaken toilet paper as the most coveted items on the shopping list, according to retailer Liam Ryan.

Mr Ryan, who runs four SuperValu stores in Togher, Glanmire, Grange, and Kilmallock, said he has been taking a number of measures to respond to the demands of the Covid-19 crisis.

These increasing the number of delivery drivers, offering a phone-in order service alongside the online delivery service, and hiring marquee tents to shelter people queuing outside his shops.

“In each of the stores, there is a dedicated person on the phones, taking orders from people who might not have access to the internet or to a computer.

"We process and pack their orders and deliver them to the door,” Liam said.

Mr Ryan also said that the local GAA clubs have been chipping in, delivering smaller orders to people in each of the four areas surrounding his stores.

“White Cross GAA, Erin’s Own GAA, Douglas GAA, St Finbarr’s, and Kilmallock GAA are all helping out doing deliveries when they are needed.”

Mr Ryan said the players do two-hour shifts, picking up deliveries from his stores and taking them to homes around the area.

Mr Ryan said he was confident that his stores would not be running low on goods any time soon.

Speaking to The Echo, Mr Ryan did his best to assure the public that whatever they are looking for, it is available in his stores, apart from pasta and flour.

“You might not get what you are looking for in the brand you are looking for, but we have everything you might need, especially toilet paper," Mr Ryan said.

“We have a very good team behind us, we won’t be running out in the foreseeable future.”
