The Defence Forces have confirmed that an audio message being widely circulated on social media, which suggests that the army will be deployed on Monday morning, is a hoax.

The audio message had suggested that soldiers needed to be ready to be deployed at 6am on Monday morning and that the country would enter a status red emergency soon after.

It said members would be on patrol to make sure there was a ‘lockdown’.

This afternoon a spokesperson for the Defence Forces confirmed they were aware of the message and said it was a hoax, describing it as both ‘extremely unhelpful and irresponsible’

“There are no plans for deployment of the Defence Forces at this stage. The Defence Forces is preparing to respond to requests for assistance from the Civil Authorities as needed.”

Yesterday the Defence Forces confirmed that it notified its personnel of an impending change to its force posture and that all non-essential activities have been suspended.

"Our focus now is to maximise our preparedness to respond to requests for assistance from the Civil Authorities," it said.

Protecting our personnel is our priority and is key to maintaining our capability to provide support to communities and civil authorities when requested."
