More Patrick's Day parades in Cork fall victim to coronavirus

WHITEGATE and Blarney have become the latest locations to cancel St Patrick's Day parades due to the spread of Coronavirus.

It follows the cancellation or postponement of parades in Midleton, Cobh and Youghal in recent days.

Organisers of the Blarney parade issued a statement saying: "It is with huge regret that we announce the cancellation of our parade in Blarney, but the COVID-19 virus is spreading and the safety of people is our priority."

Similarly, the Whitegate Residents Association posted a message on Facebook, saying: "While we had hoped that everything would be ok for the event to proceed the simple fact is that the COVID -19 virus is spreading and while all efforts are being made to contain it, it is our view that as the parade organisers we must make sure that all decisions in relation to the parade put safety first.

"It is clear to us that large gatherings could increase the potential risk for the virus to spread and therefore it is incumbent on us to make this decision."
