Investigation underway after car burnt out in early hours of morning

A CAR was burnt out in a Cork city estate early today.
Residents in Elmvale Avenue in Wilton were awakened shortly before 1.30am to a car alight in a parking area in the estate.

One eye witness said that the car, a Honda, had driven into the estate at 1.18am. A few minutes later, the car was on fire and locals called the emergency services.
The eye witness said: "I opened the curtains because I saw an orange light outside and I saw the car on fire."

He said a van parked alongside the car received minor damage.
The fire was extinguished by members of Cork City Fire Service and gardaí were called to the scene.
An investigation is now underway to establish the cause of the fire but it is believed to have been set alight maliciously.
A forensics examination was carried out on the vehicle this morning.
It is not known how many people were in the car when it arrived in Elmvale. No arrests were made.
The car remained in Elmvale Avenue this morning.
