A mass sleep out is being planned in Cork this weekend in a bid to raise money for the homeless.

Homeless charity Focus Ireland are behind the Big Rebel Sleep Out initiative, which is taking place across Cork this weekend.

The event has been run in public spaces for the past three years, which is not possible this year due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Instead, the event has been amended to meet current public health guidelines and people will take to their gardens and sleep out overnight.

Corkonians are being asked to simulate a sleep out in their own home and link in virtually with others taking part, bringing people together to challenge homelessness by staying apart.

The initiative will be led by players and staff from Cork City FC and Red FM this Saturday, April 25.

Cian Warrington of Focus Ireland Youth Services was in and out of homelessness before he linked in with Focus Ireland over two years. The charity gave him a roof over his head and a secure place to live which is all he wanted when he was homeless.

“The opportunities and lifestyle I’ve been given now, with work and college, and you know, giving back to people. They’re two kind of main things that I have in my life today.

“People say Focus Ireland looks after the homeless but there’s a lot more to it that goes on in the background. Hopefully when people fundraise then they can expand and get more places and get more people off the streets. That’s the main goal,” he said.

People can register for the fundraiser at the following address:
