ESB crews are working in the northside of Cork city and are investigating the cause of the fault which left more than 10,000 homes without power.
It is thought it may be cable related.
They are hoping to have power restored to all customers by 6.30pm.
A spokesperson for ESB Networks apologised for the interruption to service.
Local TD Thomas Gould emphasised that the outage was not in anyway connected to the coronavirus outbreak.
"People are so worried in their homes," Mr Gould said to The Echo. "It is important they know this just one of those things and nothing to do with coronavirus."
More than 10,500 homes and businesses on the northside of the city are without power this evening.
According to ESB Networks, 10,584 customers in the Kilbarry area are without electricity.
ESB Networks says power should be restored to these customers at around 5.15pm.
Power is not expected to be restored to another 42 customers in the same area after until around 8.30pm this evening.
ESB Networks said this evening that they are working to repair the fault as quickly as possible
