A Corkman who has already made his mark in the Irish music scene by climbing the charts with his new single has now been put forward for consideration at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Roy Buckley's single The Old Man on Patrick's Street was put forward for the prestigious awards when it caught the attention of San Francisco Chapter Voting Grammy Member Rian McSweeney.
Mr Buckley’s song which was inspired by an elderly homeless man on the city’s well-known shopping street and was released at the end of June before quickly climbing the charts to reach number two.
While celebrating the success of his single, Mr Buckley found out that Mr McSweeney had submitted his single for judging in the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories of the awards.
Mr Buckley said he was grateful for the “phenomenal reaction” that the single has got all around the world and thanked everyone who supported his music and downloaded the song to help him reach the top three spot on the Irish charts.
He said he wanted to send a “huge thank you” to Mr McSweeney “for seeing something special” in his song.
“The amount of people who have reached out to me over the last 22 days has been astounding. A huge thank you to all the amazing radio stations and presenters who are playing an original song from an independent Irish folk artist - it really means a lot to me,” he said.
He said that it is “mind blowing” to see The Old Man On Patrick’s Street take on a life of his own and said that he has his fingers crossed that the single makes it to the Grammy ballot in October.
“Personally, it has been a huge thrill to receive so many congratulations and well wishes from legendary songwriters and music heroes of mine from Ireland and beyond, artists I will always respect and admire for what they contributed to music.
“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank all the people who have helped me and been with me on this journey, I am walking on air and flying high because of you! Please keep sharing my song with each other and keep sending in those requests to the radio stations.” The singer-songwriter is now deciding which of his songs to release as his next single.
The first-round voting of the Grammy Awards takes place from September 30 to October 12 and nominations will be announced later in the month.
Final-round voting takes place from December 7 to January 4 before the 63rd annual Grammy Awards take place on January 21, 2021.
