An injured sailor on board a Norweigan naval vessel was airlifted to Cork following a medevac involving two Coast Guard helicopters off the south west coast this afternoon.

Both Shannon-based Rescue 115 and Waterford-based Rescue 117 were deployed after the man lost communication on board the vessel.

The casualty was airlifted by Rescue 115 and taken to Cork Airport where he was then transported by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

A spokesperson at the Coast Guard base in Valentia said that the sailor was airlifted from a position of 150 nautical miles southwest of Fastnet Rock at 5.15pm this afternoon.

“Rescue 115 did the lift and Rescue 117 provided top cover, because he was so far off we had no comms with him, so we had two choppers. One chopper went about half way and provided communication with us,” the spokesperson said.

The condition of the man is unknown at this time.
