The Live at the Drive-In series of concerts have been cancelled including gigs Cork’s Showgrounds.
Gavin James was due to headline the Live at the Drive-In series of gigs as a means to stage live gigs while maintaining social distancing after summer 2020 looked to be a washout in terms of live entertainment.
Hermitage Green and Alsan were also due to play a host of gigs as part of the series in Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny and Waterford but Aslan were forced to pull out in early July for unrelated reasons.
The family-friendly event was set to be the first of its kind in Ireland and would see artists perform two concerts per day live from stage while concertgoers watched from the comfort and safety of their own cars.
Organisers say that the concerts can no longer go ahead as planned due to government guidelines surrounding Covid-19 and full refunds will be made available.
In an official statement, promoters MPI and 360 Events said:
“We have looked at all options and have sought out support and advice from the Government, unfortunately with continuing changes with Covid procedures we can not confirm any alternate dates.
“After months of work, planning to try to bring some live music and jobs back this summer, we are devastated, full refunds are available at your point of purchase.
“We are very disappointed with this decision, the live music, arts and events sector is on its knees, we would appeal to the government to support this sector and all of its workers and suppliers.
"Apologies to everyone who has purchased tickets, we know it’s a difficult time for everyone."
Speaking of his disappointment, Gavin James posted a video message on social media addressing the news saying that it “sucks”.
"Many months of work has been put into these gigs getting the crews and the security back out doing what they do.
“It's sad it's not happening. You can get your refunds back from where you purchased the tickets. “ The singer said that he will be performing a show from his house on Friday and will try to raise money for the crews.
“Anyway, I hope you're all keeping safe and wearing your masks and hopefully we can get back to normal soon,” he said.
The affected Cork gigs are: Gavin James at Cork Showgrounds on July 31 and Hermitage Green at Cork Showgrounds on August 1.
