Teenager airlifted to hospital after cave fall in West Cork

A TEENAGER was airlifted to hospital after falling into a cave on an island off the coast of West Cork yesterday evening.

The girl, who is believed to be 17 years old, was treated for shock after falling at East Skeam Island in Roaring Water Bay, located near Baltimore. She fell 10 metres into a cave on the southern side of the island.

The alarm was raised at approximately 5pm yesterday and she was moved to the Rescue 115 helicopter on a stretcher

She was airlifted to Cork University Hospital (CUH) after being transported to Cork Airport.

The helicopter arrived at CUH close to 7pm.

The rescue operation was overseen by the Coast Guard Co-ordination Centre on Valentia Island in Co Kerry with support from Baltimore RNLI and Schull coast guard.

It is understood that the girl was with her family on the island.
