Emergency services were called to the scene, close to the Cork/Kerry border, shortly before 5pm.
It is understood two cars were involved and paramedics were among services called. It is not known at this time how many people are injured.
Gardaí are advising motorists to use the N72 via Rathmore instead, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.
