Locals of Clonakilty have praised the decision of a well-known bar not to reopen until a staff member’s Covid-19 test is confirmed negative.

Scannells Bar on Connolly Street was set to reopen on Thursday but made the decision to remain closed after a staff member conscientiously informed his employers that he had contact with two people who had attended a house party where a person had subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

The staff member did not attend the house party and had secondary contact with two people who were in attendance.

The HSE was “immediately contacted” and it was deemed safe for the bar to reopen but owners made the decision to remain closed until the staff member’s test results were confirmed to be negative.

A post on Scannells Bar Facebook page read: “After remaining closed for so long already to help curb the spread of the disease we felt the responsible thing to do was to get our staff member tested and reopen when the results are confirmed to be negative which we expect to happen in the next few hours.”

Locals took to social media to welcome the “difficult but very responsible decision” and wished staff the best on their safe reopening.

The bar has been closed since March 15 and has been undergoing some changes ahead of reopening when owners deem it safe to do so.
