Daniel O'Sullivan, from Hollyhill, is waiting on a double lung transplant and ahead of his birthday on June 24 his mum Deirdre has come up with the innovative idea to make sure the occasion is fittingly marked.
At just one week old, Daniel developed a rare form of the Adenovirus and had to receive specialist treatment in Sweden.
"He was never supposed to survive," his mum Deirdre told.
"We never thought he would get to one so for him to turn 10 next month is just incredible," she said.
Daniel still suffers from health issues and a couple of months ago took a bad turn.
"The day the coronavirus broke Daniel's lung collapsed.
"He had a few procedures to try fix it and he was very sick.
"He ended up going to Crumlin and having to have surgery," Deirdre said.
A small part of Daniel's lung had to be removed during the life-saving surgery.
Daniel is now recovering at home and despite his illness remains a "funny, witty and brave" boy.
"He's our superman and I just wanted to do something a bit special, that's why I launched the card appeal."
"When you have a sick child you appreciate the milestones even more than what you do with a healthy child," she said.
"With Daniel's illness and condition and because of the coronavirus we have had to cancel his big birthday party.
"He's understanding about it but he is really missing his friends at the moment.
"If people would like to help make his day a lot better by sending him a card that would be amazing."
If you would like to send Daniel a card, his address is Daniel O'Sullivan, 22 Meadow Green, The Meadows, Hollyhill, Cork.
