83yr old Denis O'Connor outside the Bar One Racing shop in Hazelwood Shopping Centre, Riverstown, Glanmire, Cork.

The death has occurred of local man Denis O'Connor whose heroic actions back in 2018 during a robbery at a bookmakers made him somewhat of an internet sensation.

Mr O’Connor from Glanmire, formerly of Kiskeam and London, passed away unexpectedly this week.

In 2018, Mr O’Connor came to the aid of a staff member during a robbery at Bar One Racing bookmakers in Glanmire.

The then 83-year-old fended off one of the raiders after three armed masked men entered the premises on August 29, 2018.

Two of the raiders were carrying hammers while the third man was carrying what appeared to be a shotgun.

While two of the customers willingly did not resist the robbery, great-grandfather Denis O’Connor went to the aid of the staff member and fought the raiders head on.

He and the manager of the bookmakers, Tim Murphy, managed to fight the raiders off who ran from the premises empty-handed.

Mr O’Connor is sadly missed by his family, relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends.
