Happy Meals was the order of the day on Wednesday as Corkonians all across the city showed they were lovin’ the reopening of six McDonald’s Drive-Thru’s, with long car queues.
The famous fast-food was in hot demand as people waited up to 40 minutes to get their hands on some golden nuggets, salty fries or perhaps a Big Mac burger.
Mc Donald’s appeared to have additional staff on to cope with demand, with a number of employees out directing traffic.
One employee quipped he would need another holiday by the time the day was out, such was the intensity of the work and the demand for the American Franchise in Cork.
From the queue on Commons Road, Denise Lynch from Blarney said she happened to get caught in the queue accidentally and when she realised what has happened, her son in the back of the car was hoping for some hot tasty treats to take home.
“I was just heading home from somewhere and we got caught in the queue and my son got all excited so I said why not?” Denise said she had been queueing for about 20 minutes and her son was giddy with the thought of a Happy Meal with nuggets.
Sarah Charles from Dillons Cross said that her eight and four-year-olds had begged her to queue up for some Maccy D’s.
“They have been waiting a long time for them to reopen, the older fella googled it himself to see when they were opening and when he heard it was today they begged me to go and get some for them. They want two Happy Meals with chicken nuggets!” Sarah said her children told her that with everything going on it was the only thing they were looking forward to.
Laura O’Donovan was also in the queue with her three children, Amelia, 10, Tom,7 and Hazel, four.
“We heard it on the radio this morning and they were very good doing their work this morning so I said they deserved a treat. They don’t get it that often normally so this really is a special occasion.” Laura’s three children were asking for Happy Meals with chicken nuggets.
