Cork baker to celebrate 100 days of lockdown baking

As the hospitality sector in Ireland gets ready to open again, one Cork baker is getting ready to finish off her amazing run of 100 live baking demos online with a fun competition.

As restrictive measures in Ireland were introduced on March 13, Patricia O'Flaherty from A Touch of Magic in Carrigaline decided to use her expertise and teach people how to bake.

Every morning since then Patricia has gone live on Facebook at 10am with a different recipe reaching thousands of homes both in Ireland and abroad.

Since #wewillbake live videos began 600 eggs, 85kg of flour, 70kg of sugar, 40kgs of butter have been cracked, beaten and whipped to comfort the nation at her own expense with no sponsor.

"Baking is calming, relaxing and distracting which I thought would be something I could do to help people stay inside by giving easy to follow recipes that families could enjoy making together," said Patricia.

Patricia is one of Ireland’s top confectioners having won many gold medals for her creations over the years.

She established A Touch of Magic in the late 90s when it became more than just a hobby and in recent years has set up her own baking club for kids in the Cork County Council Incubator Kitchens in Carrigaline.

However, like many other businesses, A Touch of Magic has been badly affected by Covid-19 as events have been called off or postponed.

"We had to stop our kids baking club which took place every second Sunday which broke my heart as the kids who come love it.

"On top of that, all my wedding and novelty birthday cakes were cancelled or postponed as events could not go on," Patricia explained.

"It has been a tough couple of months, but people have been so nice saying that they will book me again once this is over.

"In many ways that has inspired me to do something, so I have donated baked treats from my videos to numerous frontline services over the last few months," she continued.

This Saturday, June 20, will mark the end of her lockdown bakes and her final 100th live recipe.

To celebrate 100 days of baking during lockdown Patricia has teamed up with appliance brand Kenwood to offer the chance to win one of its iconic mixers.
