Additional car parking is badly needed for a number of West Cork beaches that are overrun at the moment with staycation holidaymakers.

Independent Councillor Danny Collins said that in places like Ballyrisode, residents are locked into their homes but cars parked along the road.

“I’ve been calling for a number of years for a car park to be put in at Ballyrisode, Cork County Council do own land there. Something has to be done or there will be an incident one day and emergency services won’t be able to get at it.” Mr Collins said Barleycove was another place that could do with a carpark.

“There is land free out in Barleycove where the council could get small bits of work done to enhance the area such as parking in the old GAA grounds. A little thinking needs to go into this, especially with all the staycations that is around."

The Independent Councillor said that the facilities and infrastructure aren’t there for large scale tourism “Cork County Council need to to put in more effort into ensuring people can visit these beauty spots.”

Mr Collins said toilets were another much need facilities at a number of these coastal sites.
