Gardaí investigating West Cork incident where child was allegedly licked on the face by stranger; man (70s) arrested but released without charge

A man in his 70s has been released without charge after being arrested in relation to an alleged incident in Clonakilty.

Gardaí in Clonakilty are investigating the alleged assault of a young boy (9) in Clonakilty on Saturday. 

Shortly before 2pm Gardaí responded to an alleged incident on Pearse Street, Clonakilty. A man in his 70s was arrested at the scene and taken to Bandon Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. He has since been released without charge. 

A file will be prepared for the DPP. Owing to the nature of the incident and age of the victim no further details are available at this time.

EARLIER: GARDAÍ in West Cork are investigating an unusual incident where an elderly man approached a young child on a street in Clonakilty and bent down to lick the face of the youngster.

The mother of the child raised the alarm following the bizarre incident on the Main Street in the town on Saturday afternoon.

Gardai arrived at the scene where the mother of the child told them she was approached by an elderly man who was nicely dressed. The man was not known to her.

The mother thought the man just wanted to say hello to her child. However, he bent down and licked the child’s face.

Gardaí spoke to a number of people who were on the street. They also accessed CCTV footage from business security cameras.

A file on the incident is set to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
