Man assaulted two gardaí during his arrest in Cork city

A 43-year-old man was convicted of assaulting two members of An Garda Síochána at the time of his arrest for threatening behaviour.

Judge Con O’Leary has now sentenced Kevin Hickey to three months but he suspended the term on condition that Hickey would keep the peace for 12 months.

Hickey of 9 Argideen Lawn, Deanrock, Cork, was also required to attend his GP and take whatever medication was prescribed for him.

Judge O’Leary read a lengthy probation report on the defendant after which he said it hard to know what to do with the defendant.

Eddie Burke solicitor agreed and said, “I am a bit stumped myself after reading the report.”

Mr Burke said Hickey’s main aim in life was to get work.

Judge O’Leary said the report showed that the defendant worried a lot and then when something upset him he reacted very badly to it.

The incident dated back to June 13 2019 when the accused was threatening and abusive at Deanrock.

When gardaí went to arrest him when he would not calm down he assaulted Garda Denis Coleman and Garda Kevin Hastings.
