Watch: Cork band's music initiative proves a big hit

The Covid Collective, including Cork duo The Shruggs. Still from their cover of Karma Chameleon.

Despite the immense challenges Covid-19 has posed to the music industry, one Cork band is thinking outside the box when it comes to jamming with other musicians and reaching new audiences.

Bandon natives Kees Hendrickx and James Downing of The Shruggs used the extra time on their hands during lockdown to form a new music initiative called The Covid Collective.

The Covid Collective sees musicians from Ireland and elsewhere in the world team up virtually to perform covers of much-loved hits.

"It's a series of videos we make with our most talented musical pals - a musical collaboration in isolation," James told The Echo

"The musicians involved hail from all over Europe and beyond including Edinburgh, Holland and Cornwall," he continued.

So far, the covers have included songs by John Martyn, Ben E. King, The Temptations and Gilbert O'Sullivan.

The latest is a cover of Culture Club's 'Karma Chameleon', which has clocked up almost 5,000 views on The Shrugg's Facebook page.

So far The Covid Collective have posted seven videos in the series, all of which are available to view on their Facebook.
