Cork City Fine Gael Councillors Deirdre Forde and Des Cahill have expressed their utter disgust at the video circulating on social media of a woman throwing a liquid at the Tanaiste, Leo Varadkar.
The video which was taken at Merrion Square shows a woman with a skateboard walk over to Mr Varadkar as he is talking to a camera recording a video.
She throws her drink at his face and runs away.
Speaking to The Echo, Deirdre Forde said she was appalled by the incident.
“Where are we going to end up if this is tolerated?” Mrs Forde said. The City Counsellor said that it was an affront and an attack on democracy and the woman could have caused serious damage if she had thrown something else.
Mrs Forde said the incident could lead to copycat attacks and feared things like hot coffee or even acid could be thrown in the future if this issue is not dealt with correctly.
“We have to draw a line, politicians are free to mix without fear or favour and that is how it should be. We can’t let this go. It is part of our job to be public figures.” Councillor Des Cahill said: “It’s a nasty cowardly act, thankfully not an instance we are used to in Ireland. She should be ashamed of herself.”
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said the incident in question is under investigation.
