MALLOW siblings Ava (10) and Daniel (9) have compiled their creative talents and designed a book that will be sold in aid of the Cork Simon Community.
During lockdown, Ava and Daniel Shorten spent a lot of their time creating poems, writing stories and drawing pictures. After entering a number of competitions and winning prizes for their work, the siblings gained some confidence and in July, they decided to compile all of their work into a book - ‘Lockdown Loot’.
“They realized they had written quite a bit and the idea arose to take some bits – some stories, some poems, some paintings and drawings - collect them into a book, and with some prompting, we decided that if we were going to do that, any proceeds should go towards a charity and the kids selected Cork Simon,” said their father, George Shorten.
“In fact, what they said was: ‘we must do something about the homeless people’.” The inspiration for choosing a charity that helps the homeless people of Cork came following some family visits into the city.
“On our trips into Cork, they would notice if somebody was sitting on the side of the road and they would ask, as kids do, ‘why are they there?’. So clearly it had been rumbling away in the back of both of their minds,” said Mr Shorten.
“I think, each step of the way they’ve done a good thing- a lot of it has been sort of accidental but they’ve been good accidents,” he added.
For Cork Simon Community, the sibling’s efforts show that anyone – young or old – can support people who are experiencing homelessness.
“It shows that younger people can be just as interested in doing something for people experiencing homeless and are just as impacted and effected by homelessness as older people,” said Paul Sheehan, Campaigns and Communications Manager at Cork Simon.
All of the proceeds made from book sales will go towards funding the services provided by the Cork Simon Community.
Ava and Daniel Shorten’s book, ‘Lockdown Loot’ is available now from the Cork Simon Community site and selected bookshops from Thursday.
