Suspended sentence for man caught carrying knife in Cork city

A nine-month suspended jail term was imposed on a 21-year-old man caught with a Stanley knife in Cork city centre.

Garda Derry O’Brien stopped Kevin Buckley of 5C Shanakiel Place, Blarney Road, and searched him on March 28.

He found that the defendant was carrying the knife.

Sergeant Pat Lyons said the young man made full admissions and said he had the knife for his own protection.

Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said that while the accused had previous convictions they were committed mainly when he was much younger.

While the accused avoided a jail term for carrying the knife the conviction will be referred to Cork Circuit Criminal Court next month where the accused has a three-year suspended sentence hanging over him on condition that he would keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

In February 2017, Buckley got a seven-year sentence with the last three years suspended on a charge of falsely imprisoning a woman in Cork city.
