€500 fines to be introduced for breaching Covid-19 restrictions

People who breach the Government's Covid-19 restrictions can be issued with a €500 on-the-spot fine under legislation to be passed in the coming days, it has been revealed.

The legislation will allow for proportionate fines for people who hold house parties and penalties for breaching the five kilometre travel limit.

RTÉ News said the Cabinet held a meeting on Tuesday to finalise the details but that the legislation will not come into effect from midnight on Wednesday when Level Five restrictions come into force.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Six One News, Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee said fines will be issued only as a last resort and that people will be given a chance to comply.

Minister McEntee said very few fines or penalties have been issued up to now as people have complied.

She added however, that there has been a “breakdown” in recent weeks with house parties and gatherings taking place that have allowed Covid-19 to spread.

The Minister said the government is sending a signal that this behaviour is not acceptable.
