NCT deemed essential service at Level 5 while theory test suspended

The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) has been identified as an essential service.

The Government has classified some Road Safety Authority (RSA) services including NCTs as essential services under Level 5 restrictions.

The Driver Testing Service, the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) , the National Car Testing (NCT) Service and the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing Service (CVRT) as essential services while the Driver Theory Test service has not been categorised as an essential service.

Where services are continuing, customers are being assured that they are being delivered in line with Government policy and health guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The RSA has asked customers to make themselves aware of the current restrictions before attending for appointments and to attend their appointments prepared.

Here's a breakdown of all services deemed essential and non-essential:

Driving Test

Under Level 5 restrictions effective from midnight on Wednesday, people can attend their scheduled driving test appointment provided they are an essential worker involved in the provision of essential services or essential retail outlets.

"The RSA does not hold details that would identify the employment status of any customers among those who have been given a test date to sit a driving test over the next six weeks and will therefore not be cancelling any existing scheduled driving tests.

"It is a matter for each individual with a driving test date to satisfy themselves that they are involved in delivering an essential service or essential retail outlet," the RSA said.

Those who are not involved in the provision of essential services or essential retail outlets are asked to cancel their test appointment online.

National Driver Licence Service (NDLS)

The NDLS hopes to allow all application types to apply online by mid-November.
