A Cork restaurant is shaking up the dining scene in the city centre with the addition of three outdoor pods.
The new pods outside Tequila Jack’s Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar on Lapp’s Quay generated much excitement when they were being installed and are now available to book.
Speaking to, General Manager of Tequila Jack’s Chris Crowley said the idea was sparked by looking at what was going on elsewhere in Europe.
“We were looking at what people were doing around Europe and how the rest of the world was reacting to Covid.
“We said look, we need to do something for when we get back open – that’s where the idea came from,” he said.
“We got in touch with a company that makes them and we partnered up with them.
“They were eager to get the pods into Ireland so we said look, we’ll partner up with you guys, we’ll start with three and see where it goes from there,” he said.
The first bookings for the pods were taken for Thursday night and it was a thumbs up all round from the first customers to experience them.
“The response has been fantastic.
"We’re nearly fully booked for this week.
"We’ve got probably two or three slots left on Sunday, but tomorrow [Saturday] is fully booked for the domes,” he said.
“Other bars and restaurants in town love the idea and customers have said they love them.
“We’re really pleased with the reaction so far,” he continued.
The pods are also a clever way to seat diners outdoors without worrying about the weather conditions.
“As we know Irish weather is unpredictable so we knew we had to do something unique if we wanted to get the business back up and running and welcome more people back into Tequila Jack's so with the domes we’ve put out front, hopefully, we’ll get a lot more people back in over the next few weeks,” Mr Crowley said.
Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, Mr Crowley said he is thankful for the support people have shown for Tequila Jack’s and is glad that the reaction since the reopening after lockdown has been positive.
“The industry has completely changed.
“I’d be lying if I said we’re back to pre-Covid times, it’s obviously taken its toll on our business and our industry as a whole but we’re thankful that the customers that have come in have had a good time and the people that are coming into us are happy with how we’re doing things.
“We’re getting a lot of positive comments about how we’re dealing with Covid and the restrictions that we’ve put in place and how we’re reacting to it,” he said.

The current maximum booking for the pods is six people and the minimum is four.
