Budget 2021: Funding for Cork roads and airport announced, but concern over silence on event centre

A  €10 million provision is being made to address challenges facing Cork and Shannon Airports.

Funding is to be made available under Budget 2021 to progress a number of Cork road projects, and to support Cork Airport, however, some concerns have been raised about the fact the Ministers did not mention the Cork Event Centre in their speeches.

Announcing the Budget today, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath said that a €10 million provision is being made to address challenges facing Cork and Shannon Airports.

He also said money will be invested in the construction in a range of major road projects including the N22 and Dunkettle Interchange in Cork.

Cork Labour Local Area Rep Peter Horgan said that the lack of any mention of funding in the Budget for the Cork Event Centre was of concern.

“The unnerving silence on the issue, notwithstanding the current pandemic that is halting live events, lends zero confidence to the situation. We have to see more detail on the matter, as a matter of urgency, for all of the businesses whose trust have been broken by the years of inaction on this project."

"There needs to be some shining light for Cork people to see in the distance that can kickstart our city again, but we need to regain a lot of confidence in this from both the City and the State,” he said.
