Drop in number of people in Cork receiving pandemic payment

There’s been a drop in the number of people in Cork receiving the pandemic unemployment payment (PUP).

The latest figures from the Department of Social Protection show 16,995 people received the payment today, down from 18,745 last week.

Last May, more than 60,000 people in Cork were receiving the payment (May 5th).

Nationally, 205,593 people received the Covid-19 PUP today, with the payments valued at €55.2 million.

The number of people receiving a PUP payment this week represents a drop of 11,549 on the 217,142 people paid last week.

In the past seven days, 7,298 people have closed their claim for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment.

Of these, 4,969 have reported that they were returning to work.

The sector with the highest number of people receiving a PUP payment this week is Accommodation and Food Service Activities (51,286) followed by Wholesale and Retail Trade (29,353) and Administrative and Support Service activities (22,129).

The sector with the greatest drop in the numbers receiving PUP payments this week is construction which stands at 15,170, down 1,743 on last week Meanwhile, the Department of Social Protection said payments have also ceased for 4,645 individuals who had been receiving PUP but have failed to confirm their eligibility to continue to receive the payment.
