Watch: Cork man bags Bloom gardening award for his witty video

A Cork man has been crowned 'Best Craic Winner' for his submission to Bloom with RTÉ.

Donal O'Lochlainn from Fermoy showcased his incredible garden in a witty video which sees his shed turned into a local watering hole, 'Covid Arms Fermoy'.

The video, which was shot in one take, features Donal's wife Edna and their neighbour Niall who Donal states was "roped in for a bit of acting".

In it, Niall is served a pint from Edna, publican of the 'Covid Arms Fermoy' established in 2020.

The facetious video has amassed a huge reaction online, garnering 15,000 views on the RTÉ Facebook page alone.

"I was thinking of doing something for Bloom and we just put our heads together to come up with the video," Donal said.

"After a few rehearsals and refining it a bit we recorded it and posted it online. There was no editing involved," he continued.

Donal said he was delighted to partake in Bloom and said the video was "great fun" to film and "good craic watching the views rising during the day yesterday".

He has won a €250 GroMor voucher for the video.

"Donal, Edna and neighbour Niall we commend your social distancing innovation to keep the craic going down in Fermoy," RTÉ said, lauding the video.

Meanwhile, 86-year-old Derry Murphy from Mayfield was entered in the online competition, which is taking place instead of the annual Bloom Festival, by his granddaughter Aoife O’Sullivan.

His garden was crowned 'Best Nature-Friendly Space'.
