UCC subjects rise in world university rankings

UCC has increased its number of subject areas in the QS World University Rankings, bringing the number to 16 —up two on last year.

The rankings are published yearly by Quacquarelli Symonds, a British company that specialises in education abroad.

The news follows UCC being awarded University of the Year by The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, and impressive performances in other international ranking systems.

UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and Pharmacy and Pharmacology join Archaeology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science and Information Systems, Education, English Language and Literature, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Law, Medicine, Modern Languages, Physics and Astronomy, and Sociology on the list.

“Such performances demonstrate that University College Cork remains in an excellent position to compete both nationally and internationally,” said UCC president Patrick O’Shea. “It enhances UCC’s reputation as an attractive option for study at all levels and assures employers that UCC’s alumni are work and world-ready,”

Prof Eileen Savage of the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery said: “I am delighted with our placement in the top 100 of nursing schools worldwide. Our School achieves excellence in offering high quality programmes at undergraduate level in four areas of nursing: general, integrated children’s and general, intellectual disability and mental health; and also in midwifery.”

Professor Stephen Byrne, head of the School of Pharmacy, said:

I am also pleased to see the research endeavours of colleagues and collaborators within UCC being recognised for their dedication and commitment. It is even more welcome to the school, as it is implementing it five- year integrated MPharm degree which started in September 2015.”

UCC also ranked highest in Ireland and 12th globally in a list of the most sustainable universities in 2017. Universitas Indonesia measured the commitment made by more than 500 universities from 74 countries in its GreenMetric Rankings of World Universities.
