The newborn baby injured at the CUMH this week has died

The newborn baby boy that was injured at the Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) this week has died.

An investigation has been launched at the CUMH after the baby's mother was found dead on the floor of her hospital room with her newborn child underneath her.

The baby was seriously hurt in the incident and was receiving emergency treatment in the hospital. However, the baby has now passed away.

The cause of the woman’s death is unknown and the incident is being treated as a tragic incident.

A spokesperson for the South South West Hospital Group confirmed that a baby boy passed away at Cork University Maternity Hospital last evening.

The mother of the four-day-old infant died at the hospital on Monday morning.

"As with all unexplained deaths a full medical investigation was immediately initiated. This investigation is currently underway at CUMH.”

"CUMH wishes to express its deepest sympathy with the family of the mother and her baby. The priority now for the hospital is the well-being of their family," the spokesperson added.
