The Galway to Cork cycle crew return for another challenge to raise funds for charity

They swear every year that this is the last gruelling 600km-plus cycle across Irish roads they will do - until they are reinvigorated by the overwhelming generosity of the Cork public to their cause, and they do all over again.

English native Ryan Willmott first organised the Galway2Cork charity cycle in 2015 to raise funds for motor neurone disease in the UK and Ireland in honour of his late mother Brenda.

Married to Cork native Karen McSweeney, Ryan enlisted family and friends to accompany him across the land he says is a second home.

It proved so successful in 2015 that the lads cycled the ring of Kerry to Cork last year in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation. This year Ryan, Ian Nevin, Brendan Murphy, Pat McSweeney, Vaughn Morrison, Paul English, Liam Kavanagh and Seamus Murphy took on Galway to Cork yet again, this time to raise funds for children’s charity Bumbleance.

Ryan said: “I feel as much Irish as I do English at this stage. I have been all over the world and I can honestly say the Irish people are the most generous in the world. None of us are athletes, and we are shattered every year, but we keep coming back when we see how amazingly support people are, especially in Cork. Year after year they help us raise thousands.”
