Students’ Union and UCC to enter mediation talks on rent issue

University College Cork has confirmed that UCC Students’ Union executive have accepted the offer of mediated talks on the student rent issue.

They are set enter into independently mediated talks with the board of Campus Accommodation UCC.

A protest has been taking place at the UCC quad since last week, with students camping out in protest at rising rents in the college.

The groups will meet to try to resolve the dispute over costs for student accommodation, which will increase 3% this upcoming academic year.

In a statement a spokesperson for UCC said: “University College Cork can confirm that the Executive of the Students’ Union has accepted an offer to enter into independently mediated talks with the management of Campus Accommodation UCC.

“These talks will seek to establish mutually agreeable proposals that will subsequently be put to the Board of Campus Accommodation UCC for consideration.

“Our goal is ensure the provision of high-quality and safe student accommodation at a fair price, significantly below that of private operators.

“The Board has already committed to waive the increase in rates for students who are in receipt of student hardship funds.”
