Strikes deferred at Cork Pfizer plants

TWO planned strikes by Siptu members working at Pfizer plants in Ringaskiddy and Little Island, the first of which was due to take place tomorrow, have been deferred.

The workers had been planning a 24-hour stoppage in the Ringaskiddy facility tomorrow followed by a 24-hour work stoppage in both plants on February 18.

They are in dispute with the company over pensions. The Siptu members had voted overwhelmingly to reject Labour Court recommendations on the company’s plans to discontinue their defined benefit pension scheme.

However, the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has now invited the sides into exploratory talks and both sides have agreed to attend.

The company said: “Pfizer confirms that it has agreed to meetings at the WRC in relation to proposed pension changes and as requested by the WRC, the company is not taking any immediate action in relation to pension changes.”
