Stanton to stand for Sinn Féin in Cork City's new North West Ward

John Stanton has been selected to stand for Sinn Fein as a local election candidate in in the Cork City North West Ward, based in the Blarney/Tower area.

Originally from Blackpool in Cork, Mr Stanton is 49 years old and works as a taxi driver.

He was a Sinn Féin candidate in the County Council local elections in 2004 and 2009 polling over 1,000 votes on both occasions and is a long time member of Sinn Féin playing a role in Jonathan O’Brien TD’s election campaigns.

Mr Stanton and his wife Linda have been living in Gleann na Rí in Tower for 20 years.

A past pupil of the North Monastery Mr Stanton studied in UCC, where he graduated with a diploma in formal and non-formal guidance.

Mr Stanton is an active member of the Gleann na Rí Residents Association and has been involved in local Sinn Féin and community campaigns as well as the campaign against the Water Charges.

He is also a founding member of the Barrett/MacCurtain Cumann in Blarney/Tower.

“The addition of John Stanton balances out the Sinn Féin ticket in the Cork City North West Ward with Cllrs Kenneth Collins and Thomas Gould already selected,” said Deputy O’Brien.

“I have known John a long time and he is a hard worker, long time part member, a decent guy and I think John has a real chance in what is a competitive ward.

“I'm convinced that voters in the Blarney/Tower/Killeens/ Rathpeacon and other rural areas will get behind John and Sinn Féin to represent them for the first time on Cork City Council,” he added.
