Serious flu cases in Cork continue to rise

More than 80 people have been admitted to Cork University Hospital with influenza since the beginning of 2019, the Echo can reveal.

The HSE revealed last week that 21 people have died and 55 more have been admitted to intensive care units across Ireland this flu season.

More than 200 people were admitted to hospitals in week 3, 2019 with flu related illnesses, more than 760 in the whole season.

CUH confirmed to the Echo that there have been 84 admissions at the hospital since January 1.

The rise in flu presentations comes as Cork and Ireland braces for a nursing and midwifery strike tomorrow.

HSE public health specialist Dr Fiona Ryan warned recently of a further increase in flu in the coming weeks.

She also warned of a possible increase in cases of meningitis which has also seen an increase in recent weeks.

The HSE confirmed earlier this month that three people have died from meningitis in Ireland since the last week of December 2018.

Eleven cases, including one in the Cork/Kerry region, have been notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) since the last week in December.
