Public urged to take part in Shine A Light Night to help Cork's homeless

This year’s Shine A Light Night initiative in aid of Focus Ireland is calling for people to sleep out to support the vulnerable homeless who have been impacted by Covid-19.

People are being encouraged to consider the initiative and sleep out in their gardens or homes on Friday, October 16 to raise funds to help alleviate homelessness.

On the same night business leaders will sleep out at Spike Island and companies across Cork can also sign up to support the initiative by sleeping out at their workplace.

Shine A Light Night has raised over €5.3m since the event began in 2015 and this year Focus Ireland and sponsors Bord Gáis Energy are aiming to raise €1.3 million.

Funds raised from last year’s event helped a total of 14,200 people across the country.

CEO of Focus Ireland, Pat Dennigan, said that although there has been a fall in homelessness during Covid-19, that the lifting of temporary prevention measures such as the rent freeze and ban on evictions “could result in a new surge in homelessness”.

918 people in Ireland were moved into long-term homes in March and April which Managing Director of Bord Gáis Energy, Catherine O’Kelly, said was thanks to the “commitment” of the Focus Ireland team.

“Looking back on a challenging few months, Bord Gáis Energy has never been prouder of our partnership with Focus Ireland. As the country moved into lockdown, the efforts of the team at Focus Ireland enabled them to move 918 people into long-term homes in March and April alone.

"The team and I in Bord Gáis Energy are as committed as ever to supporting Focus Ireland in the crucial work it does to address the causes of homelessness and increase support for those who are at risk of losing their home," she said.
