Primary Care Centre will be established in Douglas

A PRIMARY care health centre is to be established in Douglas, it has been confirmed.

Expressions of interest will be invited for the facility in the next two months.

The closest local health centres to Douglas are currently located in Carrigaline and Blackrock.

Local councillor Mary Rose Desmond (FF) said the centre is much-needed with the growth in the population of Douglas, which now stands close to 28,000 and takes in the Rochestown, Donnybrook and Grange areas.

“I have been raising this issue with the HSE for some time now and am very pleased to receive confirmation from Cork Kerry Community Healthcare that it is expected that HSE Estates will issue a notification in quarter two of this year, inviting expressions of interest to build a Primary Care Centre in the Douglas area," said Ms Desmond.

“The Primary Care Centres in Blackrock Hall and Carrigaline have been very successful but the increase in population over recent years in the greater Douglas area now necessitates another primary care centre for Douglas.

“A Primary Care Centre for Douglas would allow for local access to all of the health and social care services that you can find in your community, outside of the hospital setting. Such a centre would provide a Primary Care Team (PCT) of health professionals who work closely together to meet the needs of the people living in the community.

“A typical PCT consists of GPs, nurses, home helps, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. They all work together by sharing information and skills to ensure that patients with the greatest need receive services in a timely and coordinated way. This is an important facility for Douglas and I will continue to pursue this project”, Ms Desmond added.

More than 10 new Primary Care Centres are expected to be opened in Cork within the next two years.

Primary Care Centres aim to provide everyday healthcare services such as GP, community nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, dieticians, counsellors and in some cases dental and mental health services.
