Outrage across Cork at sickening attack on two elderly women

THERE is widespread outrage across Cork after two elderly women, one in her 90s, became the latest victims of sickening assaults.

The woman was walking in the Castlegrounds in Macroom, with another woman in her 60s, when they were pushed to the ground and a handbag was robbed.

Two men, described as tall, thin, and in their late teens or early 20s, took off in the direction of Macroom golf club and out onto the road at Sleeven Upper.

The woman in her 90s attended Cork University Hospital (CUH) for minor injuries.

Both victims of Tuesday's attack are local women from Macroom.

Fine Gael councillor Micheal Creed said it was a disgrace that the elderly women were robbed in a very peaceful part of town.

Fellow councillor Ted Lucey added: “It is awful that people can’t walk where they love to walk. Castlegrounds is a fantastic place and it is a nasty thing to happen to anyone.

“I hope the gardaí track down the culprits.”

The assaults on the women are the latest in a series of attacks across Cork city and county.

On Tuesday, a man in his 30s was taken to CUH following an assault at around 6.30pm at Marina Walk.

On Saturday last, a pensioner was viciously beaten and robbed after visiting his wife’s grave in Rochestown. It was one of three assaults in the area.

Last week, gardaí issued two witness appeals for separate assaults on Grand Parade and on Patrick Street, both occurring overnight on September 12.
