New community bus for west Cork

A NEW community bus has been launched in west Cork today by An Garda Siochana.

The bus is the first of two community buses for the Cork West garda division.

The second one will be launched in Macroom in the coming weeks and has been sponsored by local companies.

The 14-seater bus launched this morning will be used by the Community Policing unit and is part sponsored by the Carbery Group and An Garda Siochana.

Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan said that until now, Cork West's community policing unit were borrowing a community bus from the Cork city division.

And he said: “I am delighted that An Garda Síochána is able to now provide this service to the local community in Bandon. Hopefully everyone will benefit and make use of this facility. Schools, elderly groups, soccer and GAA clubs are just some of the groups that will benefit. The bus allows the community groups to engage directly with members of An Garda Síochána on a one to one basis. I would like to commend the Carbery Group for its community spirit in financially supporting this bus.” Local resident Pat Fitzgerald said "This is a welcomed service to us in the community. It is great to see our local Gardaí will be able to engage with us in such a positive way. Garda Community engagement is just as important as the enforcement side."

The addition of these buses will allow Gardaí to engage directly with local community groups. This free services would see a Garda driver bringing groups to outings and functions. Any group in the Bandon areas wishing to utilise the bus can contact Bandon Garda Station on 023-8852200.
