Neil Prendeville says 'I was not in anyway at fault' as he appears on Revenue tax defaulter list

Cork’s Red FM current affairs presenter Neil Prendeville has said he is 'not in any way at fault' for appearing on the Revenue’s tax defaulters list.

In the tax defaulters list for the final quarter of 2019, published today by Revenue, Mr Prendeville is listed in respect of under-declaration of income tax.

The amount of tax involved was €327,663, with an additional €115,674 added in interest and €98,299 in penalties.

But a statement issued by his solicitors says he 'acted at all times on the advice of his accountants'.

"The responsibility for dealing with the taxation element of his remuneration package with Red FM was given to his then firm of accountants, who did all his bookkeeping, accounts, payroll and tax returns," BDM Boylan solicitors said in a statement on Mr Prendeville's behalf.

"He was advised by them that all his taxes had been properly paid and he was fully tax compliant.

"The Revenue then audited his tax affairs."

The solicitors said Mr Prendeville was shocked to hear the correct tax returns had not been made on his behalf and issued court proceedings against his accountancy firm.

"This case was quickly settled completely in his favour vindicating him of any wrongdoing," the solicitors said. "The Insurance Company for the Accountancy Firm paid all the Tax Penalties, Interest, additional Tax, Legal Costs and Accountancy Fees.

"Furthermore, a new Accountancy Firm were employed to rectify the situation and all their fees were covered in the settlement also."

The solicitors said Mr Prendeville was also awarded 'substantial compensation' because he is to be published on the tax defaulters list.

"Although Mr Prendeville had acted at all times on the advice of his accountants, the Revenue have a statutory obligation, and no discretion but to publish Mr Prendevilles name as a tax defaulter," the solicitors added.

Mr Prendeville also made a statement on air this morning at the end of his show. He said he wouldn’t be commenting any further, and asked for privacy for him and his family.

"The issue has now been fully resolved with the Revenue and all of my taxes have been paid to Revenue by the Insurance Company for my former Accountants and I am Tax compliant again," he said.

“I’ve had two and a half years of it. I’m worn out from it."

The Revenue list also confirms that there are no outstanding payments in respect of his case.
