Mum who died in CUH room is named

THE mother who died in her room at Cork University Maternity Hospital on Monday morning has been named as Marie Downey from Kildorrery in north Cork.

The 36-year-old woman was an employee of Novartis in Ringaskiddy.

Her baby boy, named Darragh, who was underneath her on the floor when found by hospital staff, passed away at the hospital shortly after 7pm yesterday evening. He was four days old.

Marie was wife of Kieran Downey and the couple had two other children, James and Sean. She is also survived by her parents and her parents-in-law, Tom and Alma Downey.

Today, Novartis Ringaskiddy released a statement, saying: "Marie Downey was a valued member of our team here at Novartis Ringaskiddy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marie’s family and friends during this very difficult time. Marie will be fondly remembered here at Novartis Ringaskiddy."

She was originally from Ballyagran, near O'Rourke's Cross, on the Limerick side of Charleville. Her family are well known in GAA circles in the Castletown-Ballyagran area of southwest Limerick.

Local Fine Gael county councillor Jerome Scanlan said the area was shocked by the double tragedy. He added: "I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family."

A spokesperson for the South West Hospital Group said a full medical investigation is underway into both deaths.
