Man arrested after Cathedral Road stabbing

A MAN in his 30s has been arrested following a stabbing incident at a home on Cathedral Road last night.

A man in his 60s was stabbed in his own home in the city by an intruder who forced his way into the house and demanded cash.

The man was stabbed once in his leg in an incident at a house on Cathedral Road after 6pm yesterday evening.

Neighbours heard a commotion and went to the man’s home to check if he needed assistance. The door was answered by the intruder, who tried to convince the neighbours that nothing untoward had occurred.

However, the neighbours spotted the occupant of the house and saw that he had injuries to his legs and face. They called the emergency services and the man was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening but he is expected to spend a number of days in hospital.

The intruder fled the scene and the armed Regional Support Unit were called in as a manhunt got underway. A man in his 30s was later arrested.

Local councillor, Thomas Gould, said: “This is a very quiet and settled area and people are shocked by this attack. I want to pay tribute to the neighbours for their bravery in coming to his aid. All the community here hope he makes a speedy recovery.”

Gurranabraher gardaí are investigating.
