Lifeguards have finished up on beaches across Cork county after an 'extremely busy season'

Lifeguards on duty at beaches across Cork county lowered their flags for the last time in 2020 yesterday after an "extremely busy season".

The lifeguards, who finished up at 7pm yesterday evening, are advising the public to remember to not swim alone, supervise children around water and remember that inflatables are prohibited.

On their Facebook page yesterday morning, Cork Co Co Beachguards said:

"Today, Sunday, September 13, is the last day lifeguards will be on duty in County Cork.

"We would like to thank the public for their understanding and co-operation during this extremely busy season.

"From 7pm this evening lifeguards will no longer be on duty so it is important to never swim alone, always supervise children around water, and remember that inflatables are strictly prohibited.

"If you see someone in trouble call the emergency services 999 or 112."

Cork County Council’s Beach Lifeguard Service has 39 full-time beach lifeguards.

Beach lifeguards were located in Youghal (Front Strand, Claycastle and Redbarn), Garryvoe, Fountainstown, Inchydoney, Owenahincha, The Warren, Garrylucas, Garretstown, Tragumna and Barleycove Beaches.

The beach lifeguards’ motto this year was 'Safe on the Sand and in the Sea'.

Lifeguards were promoting a 'Swim & Go' policy over the summer to avoid large gatherings of people on Cork’s beaches.

On social media, there was an outpouring of gratitude as the lifeguards finished up yesterday.
