Kinsale and Ballinspittle garda stations reopen in June

KINSALE Garda Station is to open 24 hours a day from March and Ballinspittle station is to reopen at the end of June.

The announcements were made by the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan as part of a move to reassure rural communities who are concerned about a lack of garda presence in some areas.

Senator Tim Lombard said:

"It is an issue that kept coming up on the doors of Kinsale in the last two or three years and it was very obvious that it was one of the key things that people were looking for.

“Kinsale is a relatively quiet town but the population has increased by about 25% in the last ten years. So it is a really growing urban area.”

Having a presence in Ballinspittle is also a key step towards a more effective rural police force.

“To have a presence in Ballinspittle which you might think is insignificant but Ballinspittle has a huge tourist aspect, caravan parks and also a massive coastline attached to it.

“So when it comes to issues such as customs and watching what comes in in terms of drugs, it is a very very important location,” Mr Lombard said.

Mr Lombard said the infrequent hours at the garda station in Kinsale had been a source of grievance for locals.

“At present, the hours in Kinsale are infrequent, but that became a big issue for minor stuff from getting a passport stamped, getting a gun licence you weren’t quite sure when the Garda station was going to be open, at least now there will be complete clarity.”

Mr Lombard also said that the new hours will make Kinsale a safer town.

“For Kinsale, it gives them more security so if there was a guard required that you are not waiting for a guard to come from Bandon.

“Take into consideration the big tourism town it is as well, the population of Kinsale multiplies in the summertime and it is very important that we have that.”
