Jail term for woman caught shoplifting in Cork three times in as many months

A six-month jail term was imposed on a 33-year-old woman who admitted shoplifting at three different shops in the past three months.

Margaret Foley of Cork Simon Community and previously of Moss Lane, Riverway, Douglas, Cork, confessed to the crimes at Cork District Court.

Sergeant John Kelleher said Foley stole €276 worth of property at TK Maxx on July 13.

On June 14 at 3 p.m. the defendant went to Ryan’s Supervalu, Glanmire, and stole a trolley full of food and drink valued €231.

And on May 22 at Aldi, The Elysian building, she stole a bottle of vodka.

Sergeant Kelleher said Margaret Foley had 81 previous convictions including 27 counts of theft, one of robbery and two of burglary.

Defence solicitor, Diarmuid Kelleher, said in mitigation, “Unfortunately, her sister was the victim of a very serious assault and was in a coma in Cork University Hospital. It has been a fraught situation for herself, her mother and her sister. I would ask you to be as lenient as you can,” Mr Kelleher said.

Judge Olann Kelleher acknowledged the personal difficulties but was also concerned about the large number of previous convictions for theft.

The judge imposed a total sentence of six months and fixed a cash surety at €600 in the event of an appeal.
