Investigations continuing after 'violent disorder' in Cork city; TD says incident 'deeply shocking'

GARDAÍ in Cork are continuing their investigations following an “incident of violent disorder” in Cork on Thursday evening.

The incident happened at around 7.30pm in the Sarsfield Road area.

A training session of Richmond FC was underway at the time.

One man was taken to Cork University Hospital with non-life threatening facial injuries and a number of vehicles were damaged during the incident.

Gardai arrested two men at the scene for public order offences.

They were detained at Togher Garda Station.

One of the men has since been released without charge.

A garda spokesperson said another is to be dealt with by way of summons.

Cork South Central Sinn Fein TD said the incident was “deeply shocking” and highlights the need for more garda resources in Cork.

“This is very shocking for the community. It is shocking to see this happen at a sports ground, and in an estate,” he said.

The Cork TD said there had been “far too many serious incidents” in Cork in recent weeks and months adding “this cannot be tolerated.” In a statement on Richmond FC’s social media account, the Richmond FC Committee said: “We are confirming that a serious incident at a training session of our Adult AUL Division 2 team at our Garrandarragh facilities took place last evening...Richmond FC are fully cooperating with the gardaí on this matter and will be making no further comment at this stage.”
