'He had a way of making people feel special'; Tribute to Cork hairdresser following his passing

ONE of Cork’s most talented hairdressers has been remembered as a ‘perfectionist, who devoted everything to his job’ following his passing.

Jerry Hudson, the proprietor of the renowned Jerry’s Hair Studio on Carey’s Lane, passed away earlier this month at the Mercy University Hospital, following a short illness. He died at the age of 67.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Mary, and their two children, Karl and Victoria.

A Dublin native, Jerry’s hairdressing career began when he was just a teenager when he attended the Witches Hut in 1972 — one of the top hairdressing salons in the country.

After a few years of honing his craft, Jerry went on to work for the exceptional Vidal Sassoon in London and later moved to Paris for a brief period.

“He always knew he wanted to go into the industry. Hair was his passion and he was immensely talented at it,” his wife Mary told The Echo.

Returning to Cork, Jerry worked for a time in the newly opened Witches Hut salon, before establishing his own business on Carey’s Lane in 1979.

Mary, who herself works as a colourist in the hair studio, said the business was his pride and joy.

“He couldn’t work enough hours! He loved his customers and he gave them so much. He had a way of making people feel special,” she said.

“He was flamboyant, he loved clothes and style — that’s what brought him joy,” she added.

Jerry’s Hair Studio remains an important family business in Cork, with Mary and Jerry’s two children, Karl and Victoria, both working to maintain the wonderful reputation the business has established over the decades.

“We’ll keep the show on the road, that was Jerry’s motto,” Mary said.

“It’s a tough adjustment as Jerry was the main man. He was the star. We have incredible staff, however.

“During his illness, they took over and were such a support to us,” she said.

Mary also expressed her gratitude towards customers for their support during this difficult time and to fellow businesses on Carey’s Lane.

“It’s a great little street,” she said.

“A lot of the businesses have been there a long time so we’ve built up great relationships.”
