Gardaí renew appeal for information on stolen outboard engines

The three outboard engines recently stolen in Kinsale and recovered by gardaí have been returned to their owners.

However, gardaí are renewing an appeal for help in their investigation.

Gardai in Bandon want to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious around the harbour in Kinsale on the evening of February 18 between 7pm and 10pm.

The incident itself occurred at roughly 9.30pm when a member of the public spotted two men acting suspiciously at the water's edge in the Scilly area. The men fled but left behind a dinghy, which had three outboard engines on it. When gardaí responded to the incident, they discovered that attempts had also been made to steal two other outboard engines from two other boats.

Nobody has been caught in connection with the incident.

Gardaí are liaising with the Harbour Master and the local yacht club in their investigation.

They are urging boat owners to keep their boat and equipment more secure.

Superintendent Brendan Fogarty said: "Use a quality padlock on exterior boat hatches. Use high-quality chains and locks to secure the boat whilst docked or whilst on a trailer. It’s vital that all of the property associated with your boat such as outboard engines, trailers and electronics are marked in some way. For example, etch in your EIRCODE or a series of numbers and letters. Take a photograph of the property, the serial number and its marking."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bandon gardaí on 023 8852200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
