Garda sergeant raises over €12k for Cancer Connect at retirement do

A FORMER Garda sergeant who managed to raise over €12,000 for charity at his retirement function in December has presented the funds to his chosen recipients.

Dan Murphy was a member of the Garda Siochána for the past 37 years and has been involved in fundraising for the Cancer Connect for the past five years.

The charity provides free, flexible, and confidential transport service to Cork hospitals from rural parts of Cork, to people receiving cancer treatments.

For his retirement function on December 6 in Newmarket, Mr Muphy asked renowned traditional music player Liam O’Connor to play at a fundraiser event in the Highland Bar with all proceeds going to Cancer Connect.

“Liam was so obliging and the community of Newmarket and Duhallow really got behind the event,” Mr Muphy told The Echo.

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported it. The volunteers at Cancer Connect are extraordinary people and the time they put into their job is sublime.”

The presentation of the cheque to the local support group of Cancer Connect volunteers was made by Mr Muphy and Liam O’Connor on Friday evening at the Glais Community Centre.

Originally from Knocknagoshel, Dan joined the Garda Siochána in 1982.

During his years of service, he was involved in many high-profile cases such as the case of the bales of cocaine washed up on Dunmanus Bay, and searches relating to the Ann Corcoran .

Mr Murphy served as the sergeant in charge of Newmarket sub district, and as unit sergeant in Newmarket since 2001.
